September 20, 1821, the Delaware Indians departed Madison County on White River.
1924 Family of peaceful Indians murdered near Markleville, Indiana
1824 or 1825, four men named Hudson, Sawyer and Bridge Sr. and Bridge Jr. were tried and sentenced to death for the murders
of an Indian family near Markleville, Indiana. All were hung except for Bridge Jr. whom was pardoned because of his age. This
was the first time in American history that white men hung for the murders of Indians.
1826 Nathan Lowry of whom Orestes, Indiana was first named after, (Lowry Switch or Lowry Station) was born in Holidaysburg,
Pennsylvania.
Spring 1831, the first white settlers to locate in the township were George Marsh and Micajah Chamness arriving from North
Carolina.
November 1831, the first Madison County Court house was completed.
1839 Fort Wayne Trace is used extensively from Strawtown to Fort Wayne Indiana.
1840 Lily Creek Christian Church was organized and met in a log house north of Osceola
1849 First Lily Creek Christian Church was built at Boone and Monroe Twp Line north of Osceola.
1854 Joel Cook was born near Sugar Creek in south central Indiana.
1858 Lily Creek Baptist Church was organized in 1858 and James E. Ellison was first pastor.
September 27, 1861, Joseph Marion Powell was born in Kokomo, Indiana.
1864 First Orestes School was built at the southeast corner of the main intersection in what is now known as Orestes.
Prior to this children attended Davis school north of St. Rd 28 on Madison Co Rd 200W.
1871 Lily Creek Baptist Church was built four mile northwest of Alexandria costing $1,100.
October 1873 A new Lily Creek Christian Church was built costing $1,800
1878 - First Orestes School was built at the southeast corner of 300W and 1150N
1880 The Madison County Court House burned in Anderson, Indiana.
1880 Death of Nathan Lowry the founder of Orestes, Indiana or Lowry Station
June 3, 1880 - Orestes post office started operation.
1890 Joseph Powell purchased the Orestes Brick and Tile Company after owner died.
1887 to 1893 At least 23 natural gas wells were constructed in Orestes and within the one mile square
1889 The Orestes Christian Church was built.
Sept 8, 1894 - James McDermit shot and killed Isaac Martin in self defense.
Nov 1894 - Alexandria attempted to incorporate Orestes in its city limits.
Mar 23, 1895 - Orestes Town Board met for the first time electing John A Sweet as president, school trustees were Marion
Plackard, Joseph Powell, BF Fox, Jerry Martin clerk, trustees SA Bousman, Samuel McMahan, John Sweet, Myre McDermit town marshal
and street commissioners EJ Lewis, George Dwiggins and JM Powell.
Mar 3, 1896 - A petition was presented and granted for the Central Union Telephone Company to Orestes streets to construct
and maintain telephone lines.
1897 The Orestes Baptist Church was constructed.
Mar 29, 1897 Ordinance 7 was presented by the West Alexandria Land & Gas Company stating gas piping in Orestes was
complete.
Nov 20, 1897 Gas street lamps were installed in Orestes.
May 1, 1898 A sale of bonds enabled Orestes School construction to begin on Broadway St.
May 4, 1898 The Elwood & Alexandria Electric Railway was formed.
May 5, 1898 Ordinance 21 approved authorized Union Traction Company to construct, maintain and operate an electric street
railway in Orestes.
June 26, 1899 The first running of the Elwood & Alexandria Electric Railway
Feb 10, 1903 The Elwood & Alexandria Electric Railway sold out to the Union Traction Co.
Mar 13, 1905 The Orestes Volunteer Fire Brigade received support from the town board by Ordinance to further establish
the team. A shed was constructed to house equipment including the used fire wagon purchased from the town of Summitville for
$20.
Nov 21, 1908 Orestes Post Office was robbed and an explosive was used to open one security safe.
June 22, 1909 The Orestes tile factory was sold by Fred Brown to Warren Overpeck of Iowa.
Oct 8, 1909 The last of many saloons of the gas boom ear closed in Orestes when officials sited continuing disturbances
as reasons to not renew the license.
Oct 27, 1909 Marcus Little, Orestes, died from injuries in a fall from an interurban car in Alexandria.
Mar 1, 1910 Chas Flood was badly hurt after being hit by an interurban in Orestes. Flood was deaf.
Jul 7, 1911 One of the three Orestes hotels of the gas boom era is being dismantled.
Jul 1911 Orestes citizens fight to keep saloons out of town despite several applications for licenses.
May 7, 1912 American Window Glass Co considers reopening at prior location in town.
Sept 11, 1913 Osceola disappears from the map as land is bought and turned into pasture.
Sep 20, 1913 Custer & Hasty Butcher Shop was destroyed by fire and entire business district saved by brick wall.
The fire was reported as a young lad, Dwight Noble ran to the town hall to sound the alarm. The bell rope was stuck but he
did some quick thinking and climbed a ladder into the tower and rang the bell calling out the Orestes firefighters.
